Meeting the Batwa: Culture Beyond the Wildlife

The Batwa are the original forest-dwelling people of the Bwindi and Mgahinga region, relocated when the parks were gazetted for gorilla conservation in the early 1990s. Many communities now run cultural experiences that are both a livelihood and a way of keeping their traditions alive.

What a Batwa cultural visit includes

A typical half-day experience includes a walk through the forest edge with Batwa guides demonstrating traditional hunting and gathering techniques, a visit to a homestead, music and dance, and time to hear firsthand accounts of life before and after resettlement.

Why it matters

Tourism revenue from these visits goes directly to the community, funding schools, healthcare and small enterprises. It is one of the most direct ways your trip can have a positive local impact.

We build a Batwa cultural encounter into most of our Bwindi gorilla trekking itineraries as a half-day add-on - just ask when planning your trip.
